 故事開始于十六世紀(jì)初，因為皇后凱瑟琳（賓妮·巴尼斯 Binnie Barnes 飾）無法生育，英國國王亨利八世（查爾斯·勞頓 Charles Laughton 飾）同她離婚，另娶了名為恩尼（梅爾·奧勃朗 Merle Oberon 飾）的女子為皇后，哪知道野心勃勃的恩尼整天盤算著推翻丈夫的統(tǒng)治自立為王，當(dāng)她的陰謀敗露之后，亨利八世親手將她送上了斷頭臺。恩尼死后，亨利八世娶了奇恩（溫迪·巴里 Wendy Barrie 飾）為妻，哪知道在生產(chǎn)時，奇恩因為難產(chǎn)而死，只留下了一個可憐的嬰兒威爾斯（邁爾斯·曼德 Miles Mander 飾）。之后，大臣們想要國王迎娶德國公主，可這一次，國王駁回了大臣們的請求。
