　　1940年9月，德、意、日三國成立同盟。山本五十六被任命為日本聯(lián)合艦隊(duì)總司令，并不得不“違背自己的意愿”，接受命令對美、英、荷等國開戰(zhàn)。1941后12月8日零時(shí)，山本五十六親自下達(dá)了“1280”密碼命令，并親自率領(lǐng)部隊(duì)偷襲美國珍珠港，從而對美軍太平洋艦隊(duì)造成重創(chuàng)，大勝而歸。隨后山本五十六建議與美國講和，但意見未被采納。在指揮中途島戰(zhàn)役時(shí)，由于戰(zhàn)略上的重大失誤，日本海軍遭受慘重?fù)p失。形勢陡然逆轉(zhuǎn)，美軍攻勢如虹，日軍兵敗如山倒。瓜達(dá)康納島上有三萬多名日本陸軍，他們遭到了美軍飛機(jī)的晝夜轟炸，陷于絕境。山本五十六派出艦隊(duì)炮擊美軍基地，協(xié)助尚存的陸軍安全撤退。1943年4月18日，山本五十六為了鼓動(dòng)前線部隊(duì)的士氣，乘坐一架轟炸機(jī)到前線視察。沒想到日軍的密碼被美軍竊取，美軍派出空軍機(jī)隊(duì)將山本五十六的座機(jī)擊落，一代軍人山本五十六就此碎尸于太平洋上空。
