　　1858年，在博洛尼亞的猶太區(qū)，教皇的士兵闖入了莫塔拉家，按照樞機(jī)主教的命令，他們要搶走莫塔拉家的七歲兒子埃德加羅。這個(gè)孩子在嬰兒時(shí)期被保姆秘密洗禮，教皇法律是不容置疑的：他必須接受天主教教育。莫塔拉的父母心痛萬分，他們將不惜一切代價(jià)取回自己的兒子。在國際猶太社區(qū)和輿論 的支持下，莫塔拉家的斗爭(zhēng)很快就帶上了政治色彩。但是，教會(huì)和教皇不會(huì)同意歸還這個(gè)孩子，因?yàn)檫@有助于鞏固越來越動(dòng)搖的權(quán)力……
